Sash

Artist: Unknown

Culture/People: Achomawi

Place: California

Media: Beads and cotton thread

Dims: 41.75 x 3.5 in.

Date: c. 1900

Description: This symbolizes wealth and is worn with great honor. A yellow and a black bead are the signature from the artist. The artist is unknown, but the work remains a beautiful status symbol. This piece is sentimental to me because the sash pattern distinctively reminded me of my mother’s sash. She received hers as a gift from Alfred Bush, who is my grandfather’s adopted dad. She wears it during our Feast Days. —Aurora Escobedo (Tesuque Pueblo), Hands-On Curator, 2019.
